Key Stage 2:
Fire Safety Education Programme Launch

On Wednesday 21st November Firebrake Wales launched the new fire safety educational programme for Key Stage 2 with the three Fire and Rescue Services in Wales along with local school children.

Brian Fraser, Chief Fire Officer and Katie Davies, Welsh Language Safety Advisor (South Wales Fire and Rescue Service) with the children of Ysgol Gynradd Casnewydd

The Key Stage 2 programme delivers a personal safety message which includes family escape plans, the importance of smoke alarms and how to stay safe from fire. This has been designed around the requirements of the Personal Social Education (PSE) framework for Wales and is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Dr Brian Gibbons, Minister for Social Justice and Local Government says “It is important that every member of the household is aware of fire safety in the home and this programme helps year five pupils to learn those important messages through activities aimed at their age group. It’s a really useful programme which will help keep them and their families safer from fire”.

Dawn Williams, Head of Fire Safety Promotion at Firebrake Wales says “This programme ensures that children throughout Wales will receive the same key fire safety messages. We want to raise awareness that any school across Wales can request for this programme to be delivered by their local Fire and Rescue Service at their school”.

Aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 7 Tânni and friends explore with children the dangers of fire, the risks they may encounter in the home or elsewhere and how they can keep themselves safe – using the key message ‘Don’t touch, tell’ – to reinforce learning

Tânni and Beep can also sometimes be spotted on the Fire Flash exhibition stand entertaining visitors!

At present only Key Stage 1 materials are available. However, the ‘All Wales Education Group’ on which Firebrake Wales sits are currently developing materials for the Key Stage 2 Curriculum which are expected to be launched Autumn 2007 so keep checking here for more information.
